Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) is Pakistan's largest gas distribution company, originally established to distribute natural gas from the Sui Gas Field in Balochistan — discovered in 1952 in what became one of the largest gas finds in the world at the time. SNGPL was incorporated in 1963 and has grown into a massive utility covering the entire northern half of Pakistan.
SNGPL's service area includes Punjab province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Islamabad Capital Territory — covering dozens of cities, hundreds of towns, and thousands of villages. With over 7 million registered consumers across a transmission and distribution network spanning thousands of kilometres of high-pressure and low-pressure pipelines, SNGPL is one of the largest gas utilities in Asia by network length.
Gas is used for cooking, water heating (geysers), space heating (in winter), and as fuel in millions of vehicles (CNG). Industrial consumers use gas for manufacturing, and power plants burn gas to generate electricity. SNGPL manages a complex network of trunk lines, regional transmission lines, and the distribution grid that brings gas to individual homes and businesses.
Pakistan's gas sector has been facing significant challenges in recent years, including declining natural gas reserves in mature Sui and other fields, high system losses (unaccounted-for gas), and the transition toward imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). SNGPL has been managing the balance between available gas supply and consumer demand — especially during peak winter months when heating demand surges.
SNGPL is regulated by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) — different from NEPRA which regulates electricity. OGRA sets SNGPL's distribution tariffs, determines allowable profits, and mediates consumer complaints regarding gas bills and supply.
How to Find Your SNGPL Consumer Number
Your SNGPL gas bill uses a Consumer Number (11 digits) or an Account Number to identify your connection. Here is how to find it:
- 1Look at the top portion of your SNGPL gas bill for the field labeled "Consumer No." or "Account No."
- 2It is typically an 11-digit number.
- 3Also note your CNIC number — some SNGPL online portals and apps also use CNIC for consumer identification.
- 4Visit sngpl.com.pk or use the SNGPL mobile app to check your bill.
SNGPL Gas Tariff Slabs 2025
SNGPL gas tariffs are set by OGRA and follow a volume-based slab structure — the more you consume, the higher you pay per unit (SCM - Standard Cubic Meter or MMBTU). Current domestic tariff slabs:
| Monthly Consumption (MMBTU) | Rate/MMBTU (PKR) | Consumer Category |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 0.08 MMBTU (~2 SCM) | 300–400 | Protected (very low use) |
| 0.08 – 0.25 MMBTU | 600–900 | Low use domestic |
| 0.25 – 1.0 MMBTU | 1,100–1,800 | Average domestic |
| 1.0 – 2.0 MMBTU | 2,000–2,800 | High use domestic |
| Above 2.0 MMBTU | 3,500+ | Very high use / heat users |
| Commercial consumers | OGRA scheduled | Varies by category |
| CNG stations | OGRA scheduled | Per OGRA determination |
* Rates are approximate and subject to OGRA's latest tariff determination. Gas bills are in MMBTU or SCM (Standard Cubic Meter), depending on your meter type. Refer to your actual bill for precise rates.
Understanding All Charges on Your SNGPL Bill
Your SNGPL gas bill contains several charges beyond just the gas you used. Here is a detailed explanation of each line item:
Gas Commodity Charges
The base cost of natural gas consumed, calculated by multiplying your consumption (in MMBTU or SCM) by the applicable tariff slab rate. Progressive slabs mean higher consumption is billed at higher rates per unit.
Fixed Distribution Charge
A monthly flat charge covering the cost of maintaining your gas pipeline connection — the physical infrastructure from the main distribution line to your meter. This applies regardless of whether you use any gas that month.
General Sales Tax (GST 17–18%)
Federal GST is applied on gas charges. This is the same GST that applies to electricity and most other goods. SNGPL collects it and deposits it with FBR.
Income Tax
High-consumption gas consumers may have withholding income tax deducted on their bills. Filing a tax return reduces this rate for registered filers.
GIDC (Gas Infrastructure Development Cess)
A government levy collected through gas bills to finance gas infrastructure development projects — particularly LNG terminal construction and pipeline expansion. This appears as a separate line item on your SNGPL bill.
Meter Rent
If SNGPL owns your gas meter (most domestic connections), a small monthly meter rent is charged — typically PKR 20–50 per month depending on the meter type.
Late Payment Surcharge
10% per annum on unpaid amounts after the due date. Gas bills should be paid on time to avoid this penalty and the risk of gas disconnection.

How to Reduce Your SNGPL Gas Bill
Natural gas bills in Pakistan have increased substantially in recent years as production from mature gas fields declines and expensive imported LNG costs are passed through. Here are practical ways to reduce consumption:
- Solar water heater: Electric or gas geysers are the biggest gas consumers in most Pakistani homes. A rooftop solar water heater eliminates geyser costs between March and November, and a good insulated tank retains heat on winter nights too. Payback is typically 1–2 years on your gas bill savings alone.
- Insulate your geyser tank: If you use a storage geyser, wrap it with an insulation jacket (readily available in plumbing shops). A geyser without insulation loses heat constantly, causing the burner to re-fire repeatedly. Insulation can save 20–30% on geyser gas costs.
- Pressure cooker cooking: A pressure cooker cooks food 50–70% faster than a normal pressure, cutting cooking gas use by the same proportion. This is one of the easiest and most effective gas-saving measures.
- Stay in lower slabs: SNGPL's slab structure means reducing consumption from 1.2 MMBTU to 0.9 MMBTU per month can result in a disproportionately large bill reduction due to the slab rate drop. Small changes in heating and cooking habits make a difference.
- Check for gas leaks: Even small leaks waste money and are dangerous. Do the "meter check": note your meter reading, turn off all gas appliances, wait 30 minutes, and check the meter again. If it has moved, you have a leak. Call SNGPL immediately at 1199.
- Transition to induction or electric cooking: Modern induction cookers are 85–90% energy efficient (vs. 40–55% for gas burners). If your electricity cost is lower than gas per unit of heat, switching cooking to induction can reduce your total utility bills.
