About PESCO

The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) is one of Pakistan's geographically largest electricity distribution companies, responsible for electricity distribution across the entirety of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province — excluding the tribal areas served by TESCO. Incorporated in 1998, PESCO serves some of Pakistan's most culturally rich and historically significant regions.

PESCO's jurisdiction covers the KPK districts of Peshawar, Mardan, Abbottabad, Swat, Mansehra, Swabi, Charsadda, Nowshera, Kohat, Bannu, DI Khan, Haripur, and many more — covering both the verdant Potohar plateau edges and the spectacular Himalayan foothills regions including Swat Valley, the Kaghan Valley, and the Hazara region.

With over 4 million registered consumers, PESCO manages electricity supply across a challenging terrain — from flat agricultural plains near Peshawar to remote mountain valleys accessible only by difficult roads. The mountainous geography significantly increases the complexity and cost of maintaining distribution lines.

KPK is rich in hydroelectric potential — rivers like the Swat, Kabul, Chitral, and Kunhar generate significant amounts of electricity. PESCO purchases power from the national grid, including from these hydroelectric sources. Despite this rich local generation, KPK consumers often experience load shedding due to national grid constraints and technical losses.

Understanding Your PESCO Bill

Like all Pakistani DISCOs, PESCO's bill structure is mandated by NEPRA. Here is every component explained:

Energy (Units) Charge: Your consumption in kWh multiplied by the progressive tariff slabs. The biggest jump in cost occurs at 201 units — staying under 200 units per month provides major savings.

Fixed Monthly Charges: A flat monthly fee that covers the cost of maintaining your connection, irrespective of how many units you use. Ranges from PKR 75 to PKR 300 depending on your consumption slab.

Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA): Set monthly by NEPRA based on actual national fuel costs for electricity generation. This is outside any DISCO's control.

KPK Electricity Duty: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government levies an electricity duty on power consumed in the province. This is itemized on your PESCO bill.

GST 17–18%: Federal-level sales tax collected by PESCO on behalf of FBR.

Income Tax: Withheld at source. Reducing your bill amount or filing a tax return lowers this charge.

PTV Licence Fee: PKR 35/month — mandatory across all DISCOs in Pakistan.

Late Payment Surcharge: 10% per annum calculated daily on any amount not paid by the due date.

Energy Saving Tips for PESCO Consumers in KPK

  • Leverage the cool climate: Most of KPK — especially Hazara, Swat, Abbottabad, Mansehra — has a cool climate most of the year. Air conditioning is rarely needed in these areas, but heating can be costly. Use gas heaters where gas is available, and solar water heaters year-round.
  • Electric room heaters: In areas without gas supply (which is common in KPK's mountain regions), electric room heaters can be very expensive to run. A 2kW heater running 6 hours per day uses 12 units — about PKR 120–140 per day. Insulate your home properly to reduce heating requirements.
  • Micro-hydroelectric power: KPK's numerous streams and irrigation channels offer excellent opportunities for small micro-hydro power plants. Many rural KPK villages have self-powered their homes through community micro-hydro projects at very low cost per unit.
  • Solar water heating: Even in relatively cloudy KPK, solar water heaters work well and can replace electric geysers. The payback period is typically 2–3 years.
  • Use power strips with switches: Electronics in standby mode (TVs, set-top boxes, routers, phone chargers) collectively waste significant electricity. A switched power strip lets you cut power to all with one switch.

FAQs — PESCO Bill

In KPK winters, especially in Hazara and the northern districts, electric room heaters are used heavily in areas without gas supply. These heaters are typically 1–2 kW and can double or triple your monthly electricity consumption. Switching to energy-efficient heat pump heaters or gas/wood heating alternatives can significantly reduce winter PESCO bills.

Yes, PESCO is authorized under NEPRA's net metering regulations to provide net metering connections. You apply through PESCO, a bi-directional (net meter) is installed, and any excess solar energy you generate is exported to the PESCO grid as credits on your bill. This is especially attractive in KPK, which receives excellent solar irradiation. Contact PESCO's customer services or your local sub-division for the application process.

First, check with your neighbors whether the outage is in the whole street/area (indicating a feeder or grid station fault) or only your house (indicating a meter or connection issue). For area-wide outages, call PESCO at 118 to report and get an estimated restoration time. For your individual connection, check your main breaker and submit a complaint at the local sub-division if needed.
