About MEPCO

The Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) is the largest electricity distribution company (DISCO) in Pakistan by geographic area. Established in 1998 as part of WAPDA's unbundling, MEPCO covers a vast territory spanning nine districts of southern Punjab: Multan, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, DG Khan, Vehari, Lodhran, Khanewal, Rahim Yar Khan, and Muzaffargarh.

This region is predominantly agricultural — the sugarcane, cotton, wheat, and mango farming belts of Pakistan — which means MEPCO has a uniquely high proportion of agricultural tube-well connections alongside its large domestic and commercial consumer base. Managing power supply to both dense urban centers (Multan city itself) and remote rural farming communities across more than 140,000 km² is MEPCO's defining operational challenge.

With over 6 million registered consumers, MEPCO is a major DISCO serving millions of families across southern Punjab. Its headquarters are located in Multan — Pakistan's ancient city known as the "City of Saints" — and the company maintains regional offices in Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, and DG Khan to manage operations across its vast jurisdiction.

MEPCO has been progressively working to improve its distribution network, reduce line losses, and upgrade aging infrastructure. The company has undertaken several projects to install automated meter reading (AMR) systems in urban areas to improve billing accuracy and reduce pilferage.

Bill Charges Explained — MEPCO

MEPCO bills include the same national-level charges and taxes as other DISCOs. Here is a complete explanation:

Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA)

This monthly variable charge reflects the fuel cost of power generation. MEPCO has no control over it; NEPRA sets it based on the National Power System's fuel mix for that month.

Quarterly Tariff Adjustment (QTA)

A separate quarterly adjustment approved by NEPRA to account for changes in generation costs not captured in the monthly FPA. It appears on certain bills as a lump-sum addition or credit.

GST at 17–18%

Collected on behalf of FBR. Applied to the electricity charges (not the FPA in some cases, depending on the applicable rules for that fiscal year).

Income Tax

Withheld at source from bills above certain monthly thresholds. Non-filers pay a higher percentage. Filing an income tax return (available free through FBR's Iris portal) brings significant savings.

Neelum-Jhelum Surcharge (NJS)

A special surcharge collected through electricity bills to finance the Neelum-Jhelum hydroelectric project. Applied across all DISCOs including MEPCO.

Energy Saving Tips for MEPCO Consumers

Consumers in MEPCO's hot southern Punjab region face some of the highest electricity bills in summer due to extreme heat and intensive agricultural use. Here are targeted tips:

  • Farmers: use solar pumps: Agricultural tube-well electricity costs can be massively reduced by switching to solar-powered pumps. Government subsidies are often available for small farmers.
  • Avoid peak hours (6–11 PM): The national grid is under most stress during evening peak hours. Reducing consumption at this time helps both the grid and may qualify you for reduced tariffs in future time-of-use schemes.
  • White-painted roofs: In the extreme heat of Multan and Bahawalpur (summer temperatures above 50°C), simply painting your roof white or installing a reflective coating can reduce indoor temperature by 5–8°C, dramatically cutting AC usage.
  • Monitor your meter monthly: Take a meter reading on the same date each month. If MEPCO's reading seems much higher, you might have an estimated bill — request a re-reading immediately.
  • Check for meter tampering: Report any suspected tampering immediately to MEPCO. Being caught with a tampered meter results in heavy fines and penalties well exceeding any savings.

Quick Facts

FAQs — MEPCO Bill

Southern Punjab summers are extremely hot, often exceeding 45°C. This leads to very high AC usage. Additionally, summer months often see higher FPA charges because thermal power plants run more, increasing generation costs. To reduce your bill, minimize AC hours, use ceiling fans, and insulate your home's ceiling to reduce heat absorption.

Yes, mepco.com.pk works on mobile browsers. Additionally, payment apps like JazzCash, EasyPaisa, and bank mobile apps allow you to check and pay your MEPCO bill by entering your Reference Number. These apps are convenient and often faster than the official website.

Yes, the government has various subsidy programs for agricultural solar pumps. Contact MEPCO's regional agriculture department or AEDB (Alternative Energy Development Board) for the latest subsidy schemes available to farmers in the MEPCO service area. Net metering is also available for excess solar power fed back to the grid.
