About K-Electric (KE)

K-Electric (KE), formerly known as KESC (Karachi Electric Supply Corporation), is Pakistan's only fully privatized and vertically integrated electricity utility. Unlike the other DISCOs in Pakistan which are government-owned and only handle distribution (buying electricity from the national grid), K-Electric handles generation, transmission, and distribution all by itself — an integrated model unique in Pakistan.

K-Electric serves Karachi — Pakistan's largest city, financial capital, and main seaport — along with surrounding areas including Hub (Balochistan), Dhabeji, and Gharo in Sindh. Karachi's approximately 25 million residents (one of the world's largest cities by population) depend entirely on K-Electric for their electricity.

The company was privatized in 2005 when it was acquired by a consortium that included the Abraaj Group. KE has since invested heavily in reducing line losses (from over 40% to around 20%) and expanding generation capacity through a mix of fuel oil, gas-fired power plants, wind energy, solar, and re-gasified LNG (RLNG) power plants.

K-Electric is regulated by NEPRA under a multi-year tariff (MYT) framework. Its tariff determination follows a different process from government DISCOs since KE generates most of its own electricity and must recover its full cost of generation, transmission, and distribution from consumers. This has historically made KE tariffs one of the most complex in Pakistan's electricity sector.

With over 3.5 million registered consumers in Karachi's 18 districts — from the fishing communities of Machar Colony to the Corporate offices of I.I. Chundrigar Road, from the factories of SITE Industrial Area to the mansions of DHA — K-Electric serves Pakistan's most economically diverse single service area.

How to Find Your K-Electric Account Number

K-Electric uses a 13-digit Account Number (sometimes called Reference Number or Consumer Number). Here is where to find it:

  • 1
Look at the top section of your K-Electric bill for the field labeled "Account No." — it is exactly 13 digits long.
  • 2
Do not confuse it with the Bill Number which changes monthly, or the Tariff Code which indicates your consumer category.
  • 3
Visit ke.com.pk and enter the 13-digit Account Number to view your bill.
  • 4
You can also use the KE Now app (available on iOS and Android) for a more convenient bill check, payment, and outage reporting experience.
KE Now App: K-Electric's official app allows you to check your bill, pay online, report faults, track complaint status, and even request load shedding schedules for your area.

K-Electric Tariff Rates 2025

Understanding All Charges on Your K-Electric Bill

K-Electric bills can look complex because KE is an integrated utility generating its own power. Here is every charge explained:

Energy Charges

Your consumption in kWh multiplied by the applicable tariff slab. For domestic consumers, this uses the same progressive slab structure as government DISCOs.

K-Electric Fuel Price Adjustment (KE-FPA)

Similar to the FPA of government DISCOs, this adjusts for the actual fuel cost of electricity KE generated in a given month. Since KE generates its own power (using gas, oil, and later RLNG), this is directly tied to its own fuel purchases. NEPRA reviews and approves KE's FPA separately from the national grid FPA.

Quarterly Tariff Adjustment

A quarterly true-up of costs not captured in the monthly tariff, approved by NEPRA. This can create significant additional charges in certain months.

GST (17–18%)

Federal General Sales Tax on electricity charges. Same as all other DISCOs in Pakistan — collected by KE on behalf of FBR.

Income Tax

Withheld at source on higher-consumption bills. Tax filers pay a lower effective rate — register as a tax filer through FBR's Iris portal.

Sindh Sales Tax on Services

Karachi is in Sindh, which levies its own sales tax on certain services. This may appear on K-Electric bills as a separate Provincial Sales Tax line item.

Surcharges

Neelum-Jhelum Surcharge (NJS), tariff rationalization surcharges, and other NEPRA-mandated levies are included. These apply equally across all DISCOs in Pakistan.

Late Payment Surcharge (LPS)

10% per annum on unpaid amounts past the due date. K-Electric also sends SMS reminders before and after the due date to help consumers pay on time.

How to Reduce Your K-Electric Bill in Karachi

Karachi is one of the most energy-intensive cities in Pakistan — hot humid summers make AC use almost mandatory, and the industrial base is enormous. Here are Karachi-specific tips for reducing your KE bill:

  • Rooftop solar: Karachi's sunny, mostly dry weather makes it ideal for rooftop solar. KE's net metering program allows you to export excess power. Payback periods in Karachi for residential solar are typically 3–5 years, after which electricity is essentially free.
  • Inverter ACs: Karachi's AC season runs almost year-round (8–10 months). Switching to 5-star inverter-rated ACs from old fixed-speed units can cut AC electricity consumption by 40–50%. This is the biggest single saving for Karachi households.
  • Sea breeze ventilation: Karachi enjoys a coastal sea breeze, especially in the evenings. Designing your home or apartment to capture this natural breeze (cross-ventilation, correct window placement) can dramatically reduce AC hours from April to October.
  • KE Now App for monitoring: The KE Now app lets you track your consumption in real time and get bill alerts. Use it to spot unusual consumption spikes early — they could indicate a malfunctioning appliance, leaking water pump, or a billing error.
  • Commercial energy audits: For businesses in SITE, Landhi, Korangi, or DHA Phase 8, a professional energy audit by a NEPRA-certified energy auditor can identify savings of 15–30% on electricity costs. Many industrial consumers recover the audit cost within one month.
  • Check your tariff category: Many Karachi consumers are incorrectly classified in a higher-rate commercial tariff when they should be on the domestic rate. Check the "Tariff Code" on your bill — D1 and D2 are domestic; B-codes are commercial. If incorrect, file a reclassification request with K-Electric.

FAQs — K-Electric Bill Karachi

K-Electric is Pakistan's only fully private electricity utility. It was privatized in 2005 (when it was still called KESC). The company is publicly listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange. Unlike IESCO, LESCO, and other DISCOs which are government-owned, KE operates independently under a NEPRA licence, managing its own generation (power plants), transmission (high-tension lines), and distribution (connection to your home) in an integrated model.

June and July mark Karachi's most humid period. Air conditioning runs almost continuously for many households, and the AC works hardest in humid conditions (because it also dehumidifies the air). Additionally, KE's summer FPA charges tend to be higher as more expensive thermal generation is needed to meet peak demand. The combination of maximum AC usage and higher per-unit fuel costs results in the year's highest bills for most Karachi consumers.

Apply through K-Electric's website at ke.com.pk under Customer Services → Net Metering. You need a NEPRA-licensed solar installer to prepare the application. KE will verify your solar installation, install a bi-directional meter, and connect you to the net metering system. Any excess solar units you export are credited on your next KE bill. Processing typically takes 30–60 days from a complete application submission.

Yes, you can pay your K-Electric bill through the KE Now app (the most convenient option), JazzCash, EasyPaisa, SadaPay, Nayapay, and all major Pakistani bank mobile apps (HBL, MCB, UBL, Meezan, Habib Metro, etc.). Enter your 13-digit Account Number during the payment process. KE also accepts payments at thousands of partner bank branches, Easy Paisa agents, and dedicated KE customer care centers across Karachi.
