About GEPCO

The Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) was incorporated in 1998 during WAPDA's restructuring and serves the Gujranwala Division — one of the most industrially active regions of Pakistan. GEPCO's territory includes the districts of Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Narowal, Hafizabad, and Mandi Bahauddin.

The Gujranwala region is famous for its massive light engineering and surgical instruments industry. Sialkot is world-renowned as a global hub for sports goods (particularly footballs), surgical instruments, and leather goods exports. This industrial diversity means GEPCO serves a uniquely varied mix of small workshops, large factories, and dense urban communities.

Gujranwala city itself is one of Pakistan's fastest-growing cities, with a rapidly expanding residential sector that has significantly increased domestic electricity demand over the past decade. GEPCO has been expanding its grid capacity to keep pace with this growth while managing the challenge of line losses in densely populated areas.

GEPCO has over 4 million registered consumers and a distribution network that spans thousands of kilometres of overhead lines, underground cables in urban areas, and hundreds of grid stations and distribution transformers.

Understanding Your GEPCO Bill Charges

Like all NEPRA-regulated DISCOs, GEPCO bills include the following charges beyond the basic tariff rate:

Energy Charges: Your consumption in kWh multiplied by the tariff slab rate, calculated progressively across slabs.

Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA): A monthly variable charge reflecting actual generation fuel costs. This is set by NEPRA and can be a significant portion of your bill during months when expensive oil-fired plants are heavily used.

GST (17–18%): General Sales Tax on the electricity charges, collected for and deposited with FBR. Itemized separately on your bill.

Income Tax: Withholding tax at source. Non-filers of income tax returns pay at higher rates. Register yourself as a filer through FBR's Iris portal to reduce this.

Electricity Duty: Punjab provincial duty on electricity consumption. A small percentage of the energy bill.

Meter Rent: A small monthly charge if GEPCO owns your meter rather than you. Typically PKR 10–35/month.

PTV Fee: PKR 35/month flat Pakistan Television licence fee collected via electricity bills.

Late Payment Surcharge: 10% per annum on overdue amounts. Always pay on time to avoid this.

Electricity Saving Tips for Gujranwala Region

  • Business owners: Energy audits for your factory or workshop can identify quick wins like replacing old motors with energy-efficient models (IE3 class), reducing idle running time of machines, and optimizing compressed air systems.
  • Sialkot exporters: Many Sialkot export factories have adopted solar plus grid-tie systems, effectively cutting their GEPCO bills by 40–60%. The initial investment is typically recovered in 3–4 years.
  • Use natural ventilation: Gujranwala has mild winters and hot summers. Design your home or workshop to maximize cross-ventilation, significantly reducing AC usage for several months of the year.
  • High-efficiency motors: Replacing old single-phase and three-phase motors with IE3 efficiency class motors saves 5–10% energy for the same mechanical output.
  • Monitor your bill monthly: Set a reminder to check your GEPCO bill as soon as it is issued. Catching errors early (wrong meter reading, estimated bills) means quicker correction and no delayed surcharges.
